Shark Week

That's right.  It's Shark Week and we couldn't be happier!  We look forward to it all year.  It may seem weird to some, but I have always, and I do mean always, loved sharks.  I was 4 yrs. old when I saw "Jaws" and it was a triple feature.  I was never scared - I wanted one.  I wanted a big great white for a pet.  We had a pool.  It made complete sense to me.  God bless my Mother.  She explained they need salt water, which our pool was fresh water and not that I was crazy.
She bought me every shark book I could get my hands on.  That was when we lived in Indiana.  Then we moved to Florida when I was 7.  Then...then I got more books.  More shark books.  I watched every documentary on them.  Drew posters.  Dreamed about them.
My son has the love for them too.  And a bit of my craziness...he watched "Jurassic Park" as a baby and laughed all through it.  Fell in love with T-Rex.  T-Rex was his imaginary friend.  He ran like T-Rex, ate & played like T-Rex would.  A little while later Raptor joined the bunch.  They were his buddies for a long, long time.
My daughter wasn't scared of dinos or sharks or anything that scares most kids.  Spiders, snakes, etc., she loves.  We did the raising butterflies from caterpillars.  Most consider the caterpillar icky...not my daughter...she wanted them to crawl all over her.  Everything going great, right?
They metamorphosed into 5 beautiful Painted-Lady butterflies, which we observed for a day or so. Then it was time to set them free.  My son was begging to go first.  I took one out of the "butterfly canopy" and placed it on the back of his hand.  He held it for a moment and released.  Beautiful.
My daughter's turn - I reached into the canopy, picked the little one out, placed it on the back of her hand...and there was nothing but sheer terror!  She screamed and screamed and beat the living daylights out of the back of her hand, jumping up & down all the while!!!  The butterfly flew away before the beating had commenced, thankfully.  (Didn't want that on her hand!  And, of course I didn't want the butterfly hurt - do you know how much those things cost?  Just joking...  =)
Any flying insect she hates.  Dragonflies are the exception.  Beautiful, delicate, non-biting butterflies are the plague of the earth to her.  Can't explain it, she's tried to explain how creepy they are, in great detail, but I still can't see it and think it's absolutely hilarious.
So, that was the last time we did the caterpillar/butterfly thing.  We have caught spiders, snakes and frogs-those she has no problem with.  And then there's the sharks.  We have a great love for all ocean creatures, but have a total amazement for sharks.
It's my daughter's last week of summer before we start school and my son has 2 weeks to go.  Where are they right now?
     Watching Shark Week!
